What are the types of clay soil available?
Globally there are two types of
clay soil are available. One is black clay soil and second is
red clay soil.
Black clay soil:
Black clay soil is dark and holds too much water. It becomes very hard when it dries and we can not break it easily.
Red clay soil:
Red clay soil is lighter in color and holds a lot of water. It becomes compact
when dry.
Both types of clay soil have poor drainage which can stop plant roots from growing

is clay, we can use these two simple and reliable tests:
First is feel test:
This is the first method or test which we can try at home. We just need to take a small amount of wet soil and squeeze it. If it became like a sticky
ball which does not crumble easily then it is a clay soil . It will also feels very
soggy and slippery in wet condition.
Stretch and roll test:
This is the second method or test which we can try at home. we can take some moist soil
and roll it between our hands. If we can form a long strip roll and it does not break then the soil is a clay.

Methods to improve clay soil at home
Following is a simple and authentic guide for us to improve our
clay soil by using sand and compost. We can simply follow these steps at our home and improve our clay soil into best soil for growing all plants.
Step 1: Take required amount of the clay Soil
In this step we should take required amount of the clay soil in any bucket or
container which we have generally at home. We fill the bucket with the soil to determine the amount which we want to use for our plants.
Step 2: Check the Moisture Level of the clay Soil
After taking the required amount of clay soil, we need to make sure that the clay soil is
slightly moist. It should not be too much wet or dry.
If the clay soil will be dry then it will be hard for us to
break it in small parts and mix properly.
If the clay soil will be more wet then it will be too sticky
and soggy which will make us difficult to work on it.
The best moisture level is that when we can it break into small pieces easily. so if it is dry then we should moist it properly to start next step.
Step 3: Add Sand in clay soil
After taking required amount of moist clay soil we should add an equal
amount of fine river sand on it. Fine river sand will help us to loosen the compacted clay and improves
drainage. We use same bucket or container to measure the sand. We should make sure that it is the same
amount as the clay soil.
Step 4: Add Compost in clay soil
After adding the fine river sand, we should add the same amount of compost or organic matter on it.
Compost provides nutrients that help our plants grow and improves the soil
structure. We measure the compost with the same bucket to make sure we have the
right amount to match the clay soil and sand.
we can use kitchen waste compost, vermicompost, leaf mold and different types of manure compost which are easily available at your area.
Step 5: Mix Everything Together
Once we have added sand and compost on clay sand. We should mix them
well. We can use a shovel garden fork or our hand to stir all things thoroughly. This step
will take some time and we should ensure that everything is evenly distributed.
By following these simple steps and mixing equal amounts of fine sand and compost into the clay soil our soil will improve for plant growth. The sand helps loosen the thick clay and help to drain water more easily from it and provide proper air access to the roots. The compost adds important nutrients and making the soil richer and better for plants. This combination will improve our clay soil and create a healthier environment for plants to grow stronger.
Conclusion -
By following a simple process of measuring,
assessing moisture and adding fine sand and compost in our clay soil we can
significantly improve the structure of soil. Sand helps break up the
compacted soil and improve its drainage. Compost will add essential nutrients and help for healthier plant growth.
